Fatu Iva

Hanavave

In the very south of the island group, Fatu Iva (or Fatu Hiva) is the most isolated and possibly the most beautiful island.

The inhabitants specialise in the making of tapa, beaten bark cloth which can be drawn on, the making of perfumed monoi and carved coconuts and precious woods.

Only the valleys are inhabited by more or less 500 people. As the island does not possess an airstrip, it relys on small cargo ships to supply provisions.

But the real interest of the island is that it is cut off from the rest of the world , except for the telephone and the inevitable television. One can therefor get carried away in the atmosphere of the island, discover the handicrafts and kindness of the population.

Thor Heyerdal, head of the Kon Tiki expedition, lived in in Ouia village on the east coast.
