Ua Pou

The most populated island of the Marquesas , Ua Pou , is found 50km south of Nuku Hiva. It is said that the island is both young and old due to its geomorphology originating from two different volcanic periods. The spectacular peaks give an impressive force to the scenery.

The local artwork specialises in the weaving of pandanus, objects made of wood, as well as carvings, the confection of ornaments made of shells, mother of pearl shell, bone ........Hohoi bay is one of two places in the world where "flower stones" are found, pebbles surprisingly decorated naturally with flower shaped designs. The island can be reached by the weekly dornier flight by air tahiti , or by helicopter from Taiohae. It is often possible to come to an arrangement with one of the many speedboats and fishing boats which do this trip.
